When will the building be demolished?

Works will take place in mid-2023 at a cost of $40,000.  Demolition of the building and clearing of the site is expected to take five weeks and there may be increased traffic in the local areas as construction vehicles remove debris from the site.
We thank the community for your patience during the works.

What will happen to the site in the long-term?

Any decisions on the long-term future of the site will be made once there is greater clarity on the upcoming Level Crossing Removal project. The Victorian Government has announced that the crossings at Highett Road and Wickham Road will be removed by 2029, however details about the project timing and how it may impact the local area are not yet known.

Are there any plans for a new kindergarten in the area?

The former kindergarten building was aged, and the former site too small to host a modern purpose-built facility. Future projections for the area anticipate growing demand due to population growth and the introduction of funded three-year-old kindergarten – which will see the number of children enrolled at three-year-old kindergarten increase. Council is currently exploring opportunities for new, expanded kindergarten services to meet this future demand, and this is a high priority for Council’s investment in early learning facilities.

How are we preserving the history of the Highett Preschool?

For generations of local families, over the course of 64 years, the preschool at 3 Station Street Highett had provided a place for learning and connecting with others.
Following the closure in 2019, a community celebration was later held to mark the history of the preschool and its contribution to the community.

The event included the launch of an article on the Kingston Local History website to capture some of the preschool's rich history.   Read the article

We are also hoping to incorporate artwork from the preschool building in the new park - potentially on the fence.
