UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback. While there was some support for an upgrade, the local community raised strong concerns about several elements, particularly the perimeter fence. Given this, we will not proceed with our plans to upgrade the dog off-leash area at Bicentennial Park.
As part of our commitment to providing quality parks and open spaces for the community, we're planning to upgrade the off-leash dog park at Bicentennial Park in Chelsea.
Project details
While already designated as an off-leash dog area, the site will undergo a transformation to address community requests to transition the space into an enhanced space for dog recreation.
The proposed concept aims to elevate this existing off-leash area into an attractive space with a perimeter fence, providing a delightful and secure environment for dogs to play and explore.
Highlights of the design include:
New perimeter fence with double gated entrance (this will not impact the size of the current off-lead area)
New benches and picnic settings
Logs and natural play
Proposed new trees to provide more canopies
Improved surfacing
Existing shelter, drink fountain, seat, dog agility items, bin and gravel surface to be retained
Site limitations
As part of the environmental management, the old landfill site was capped. This cap varies in depth throughout the site. Because of this, there are limitations on what can be installed on site and where facilities can be located. There are also restrictions on where tree planting can take place as additional soil will be required to mound areas for new trees. Council is, however, keen to increase tree planting and biodiversity values within the site, so every effort will be made to increase planting and tree canopy cover across the site, in appropriate places.
