Play your way at Bourke & Patty Street Reserve!
We’re excited to be planning for the upgraded playground at Bourke & Patty Street Reserve in Mentone! A draft design has been developed, and we would like to know your thoughts.
The new playground area has been designed to offer an inclusive experience and play environment for all. Highlights of the design include:
- Sand pit with mudstone rock and log edging
- Nature play with Babel Drum and boardwalk leading into the sand pit
- Teepee cubby with shopfront and seating (for toddlers/junior children)
- Inclusive carousel and a tri-swing set with an inclusive nest, junior high back and sling swing on rubber soft fall
- Climbing unit with twig stack, logs and ropes (for senior children/teens)
- Combination unit with a roof for shade, a slide, shop front, monkey bars, fireman pole, and tunnel (for primary school-aged children)
- New seats, social seating areas, picnic tables and shelter
- New trees, planting and talk tubes in garden beds
- Upgraded footpath within the reserve and shrubs along the boundary fence
- Bike racks, bins and a drinking fountain
*Additional space for an active recreation area is also proposed in the design and would be suitable for a netball ring/practice area or agility equipment with a climbing structure.
The existing open grass area, basketball half-court and fencing around the reserve's perimeter will be retained - with mesh infill to be added to the Bourke Street boundary. To provide natural shade and screening, additional trees and landscaping improvements are proposed and included in the draft design.
Correction: It was proposed above that mesh infill be added to the fence on the Bourke Street boundary. However, it has an existing mesh infill, which will be retained. Comments on the Patty Street side have been noted.

Designing your playground
In 2023, over 2,500 of our residents had their say about the future of play in Kingston - and it's clear: you love our playgrounds just as much as we do! Through a series of events and workshops, complemented by an interactive online survey and a playground design tool, we connected with a diverse range of our residents - from toddlers to seniors. Community feedback helped shape the Play Your Way Strategy - and our draft design for the upgraded playground at Bourke & Patty Street Reserve in Mentone!
Bourke & Patty Street Reserve playground is classified as a 'Local' play space in Council's endorsed Play Your Way Strategy. 'Local' play spaces are small but are of important play value. They generally service three or four neighbourhoods and should ideally be within a 10-minute walk from home without the need to cross a major road or railway line. Visits are still likely to be short in duration but may involve social interaction with others. They are often equipment-based play ‘spaces’ with some kind of personal fitness/active recreation option as well as support facilities such as seating, shelter and BBQ. There should also be surrounding open space for informal ball games, relaxation and social gathering. As such, the playground design has been developed in response to the 'Local' play space classification.
