Background Information

We’re updating Kingston’s Parklet Policy for 2026, and we want to hear from you!

Since 2020, parklets have played an important role in bringing life to our streets by creating outdoor dining spaces, community seating and vibrant local precincts.

Originally introduced to support businesses during COVID‑19, parklets have become a valued feature across Kingston.

Now, we’re reviewing the policy to ensure parklets continue to be safe, well‑managed and beneficial for the whole community including businesses, residents and visitors.

Why are we updating the Policy?

The current Parklet Policy (introduced in 2022) helped establish parklets quickly and successfully. As the program has matured, we’re aiming to:

  • improve clarity of responsibilities for businesses
  • ensure parklets provide genuine community benefit
  • support fairness for all users.

The updated policy will guide how parklets are managed into the future.

What’s changing?

We’re proposing a number of updates to improve how parklets operate, including:

  • clearer responsibilities when multiple businesses share a parklet
  • opportunities to expand parklets where community benefit is demonstrated
  • expectations for regular use and activation
  • clearer processes for unplanned works and operational needs.

You can read more about these proposed updates in the document section of this page.

Have your say!

We want to understand how parklets are working for you and how they should evolve in the future.

Whether you’re a business owner, resident or visitor, your feedback will help us get the balance right.
