Original consultation post as follows:

You helped us map out how to improve cycling and walking in Kingston. Now let's prioritise our projects.

Passive exercise is not only good for our health and well-being, it's also great for the planet.

Kingston is committed to improving local walking and cycling and is calling on the community to let us know which projects they want to see brought to life. Community members are invited to vote on their favourite projects to help shape our city’s Walking and Cycling Plan 2023-2028.

Background

In spring 2021, we asked what changes we can make to our city to make zero-emission transport options (such as walking and cycling), your first choice for short trips around Kingston. We received over 900 pins on a map and more than 200 survey responses from community members who let us know what changes they’d like to see made to improve their local experience with cycling and walking. Read more here.

This extensive feedback has been considered against upcoming projects, adopted masterplans and policies, to determine which ones could be shortlisted for priority projects.

Cast your vote and help us to prioritise projects!

Forty priority projects have been identified for Kingston. Community members are invited to view the projects and vote on your favourites to help shape our city’s draft Walking and Cycling Plan 2023-2028 and help to prioritise these projects.

The feedback we receive from the community will help shape future improvements to local cycling and walking paths set out in our Walking and Cycling Plan 2023-2028, which will be implemented subject to funding.

Voting now closed - thanks to everyone that contributed!

We're also seeking feedback on our draft Walking and Cycling Plan 2023-2028

We've also set out a number of actions and considerations in the draft Cycling Plan, which includes projects we're keen to advocate to other agencies, for funding or implementation. You're invited to read and provide feedback on the full Draft Plan or the Abridged Version which is available in our document library, on this page.

This consultation will open from Saturday 4 March until 11.59pm on Sunday 16 April 2023.

Policy context

In 2020, Council adopted the Kingston Integrated Transport Strategy (KITS). The KITS is a high-level umbrella document that sets the direction for the management of transport and under which additional transport plans (such as the Cycling and Walking Plan) are positioned.

The vision of the KITS is “Kingston is a city with a connected, integrated, and sustainable transport network that is safe, healthy, accessible, reliable, and efficient.”

OBJECTIVE #1 of the KITS Strategy is: to make walking and cycling the preferred transport choice, particularly for short local trips. One of the actions in the KITS to create an updated version of the Council’s Cycling and Walking Plan (2009-2013).

In early 2020 the World Health Organisation announced COVID-19 as a Pandemic. COVID-19 restrictions in 2021 have had profound impacts on how we travel, which has brought about an increase in walking and cycling.
