An update on the speed limit reduction on Fairbank Road, Clayton South

Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their feedback during our consultation in August 2025 on the proposed speed limit reduction for Fairbank Road.

Your feedback helped inform Council's submission to the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), which approved reducing the speed limit from 60km/h to 50km/h.

As part of the review, Main Road and the section of Haughton Road between Centre Road and Main Road were also identified as suitable for a 50km/h speed limit, based on crash history, surrounding land use and consistency with the local road network.

The new 50km/h speed limits on Fairbank Road, Main Road and this section of Haughton Road were installed in early July. These changes support Council's Road Safety Strategy and aim to make our streets safer for everyone.


We're responding to community concerns about traffic and safety on Fairbank Road, Clayton South


Background

As part of our Walking and Cycling Plan 2023 - 2028, we’re working to improve safety for everyone who uses our road network - including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

We've identified Fairbank Road in Clayton South as a high-risk area for traffic incidents, with many attributed to the current 60km/h speed limit.


Proposed change

To address safety concerns, Council is proposing to reduce the speed limit along Fairbank Road from 60km/h to 50km/h.

The existing 40km/h school zone on the east side of Fairbank Road will remain unchanged.

We want to hear from local residents, road users and the wider community about the proposed speed limit change. Your feedback will help inform Council’s submission to the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) as part of the decision-making process.
