The future of our waste - 2025 consultation

Waste is an ongoing challenge for local communities across Australia. With landfills rapidly filling up, we must continue to evolve and find solutions to managing waste in Kingston.

Together, let's reduce, reuse, recycle... and reimagine our waste.

We're developing a waste strategy to help guide our waste services and education programs in the future - with the aim to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste Kingston produces and sends to landfill.

We're seeking your feedback on a range of topics to inform the development of our plan, including:

→ our current waste services

→ the introduction of glass recycling

→ waste education and programs

→ future waste priorities.

Kingston's waste

We have an opportunity to improve the cost effectiveness, and efficient management of our waste, and understanding how you use our waste services is key to planning how best to do this.

The Victorian Government has set a target of diverting 80% of waste from landfills by 2030.

Currently, Kingston's households compost and recycle 55% of their total waste.

While we have seen a 7% increase in our diversion rate following the introduction of food waste recycling in Kingston, there is still room for improvement.

*The City of Kingston's waste services operate on a cost-recovery model, meaning additional waste services may increase the waste charge on your rates notice. When developing our waste strategy and exploring solutions to managing Kingston's waste, we must continue to maintain a balance between affordability and service provision.

We want to hear your values, preferences and ideas on reducing and recycling waste via:
