UPDATE - OCTOBER 2022

This consultation has closed. Thanks to all of you who provided feedback, we’ve also added more seating, bike racks, additional greenery, a drinking fountain and picnic tables. We anticipate work to begin in autumn 2023, after the yachting season.

Here are some renders of how we expect this to look (without the requested amenities in-situ). Read more about the Parkdale Yacht Club Improvement Project.

ORIGINAL POST DETAILS:

We're working to improve access to Kingston's beaches. As part of this commitment, we're planning to upgrade beach access and parking at the Parkdale Yacht Club.

Background

Last year, we completed works on a new $2.9 million facility for Parkdale Yacht Club that is also being used by the Kingston District Girl Guides and Beach Patrol Australia.

The building works have future-proofed the facilities for decades to come. They are fully accessible and utilise sustainable building designs. And we've been preparing plans to undertake car park, shared user path and ramp construction works to complement these design by- improving community access to the beach, building and shared user path.

It's just one part of our plans to improve accessibility and Council aims to roll out more accessible pedestrian ramps in the future.

What now

We will soon be commencing work on detailed designs for a new asphalt car park, an accessible pedestrian ramp down to the beach, a dedicated accessible parking bay and putting the finishing touches on this section of the Bay Trail (Shared User Path).

This work would include creating 11 line-marked parking bays, a dedicated accessible parking bay and four bays for rescue boats. It also allows for the car park to be gated off for the Yacht Club's Regatta events, which would allow for 27 informal car parks.

An accessible pedestrian ramp would safely allow travellers with wheelchairs and prams (or people carting heavy equipment) to get down to the beach safely.

Included in these concept plans is a permanent shared user path - which would add the finishing touches to the Parkdale section of Kingston's Bay Trail.

And we have worked with PTV to ensure the bus shelter remains close by - in the safest space available.

Work will commence in autumn 2023 (just after the yachting season).
