Improving Doug Denyer and Kevin Hayes Reserves

As part of Council's commitment to enhancing open spaces, we're undertaking pre-planning for Doug Denyer Reserve in Mordialloc to develop an improvement plan for the site, along with understanding how you use Kevin Hayes Reserve.

While we continue to advocate for funding for the reserve improvements, we're excited to be moving ahead with our plans to upgrade the existing playground.

Playground

In 2023, over 2,500 of our residents had their say about the future of play in Kingston - and it's clear: you love our playgrounds just as much as we do! Through a series of events and workshops, complemented by an interactive online survey and a playground design tool, we connected with a diverse range of our residents - from toddlers to seniors. Community feedback helped shape the Play Your Way Strategy.

Doug Denyer Reserve Playground is intended to be upgraded to a ‘Local’ level classification in line with our Play Your Way Strategy, where key features include:

  • Inclusive play
  • Space for small recreation activities
  • Picnic spaces, BBQ and area for social gathering
  • Nature elements

Reserve Improvement Plan

Doug Denyer Reserve is a diverse recreation space which also plays an important role in the local drainage network; home to the Mordialloc Tennis Club, and Mordialloc Cricket Club, and used by the South East Soccer Academy with the large fenced Kevin Hayes dog park, playground and half-court basketball nearby.

We are creating an improvement plan for Doug Denyer Reserve which will consider an overall vision for the reserve, enhancing and expanding on the existing features.

Site limitations

Doug Denyer plays an important role in the local drainage network with a flood retarding basin and large Melbourne Water drain separating the space between Doug Denyer and Kevin Hayes Reserve.

Doug Denyer is also a former landfill site. As part of the environmental management, the old landfill site was capped. This cap varies in depth throughout the site. Because of this, there are limitations on what can be installed on site and where facilities can be located. There are also restrictions on where tree planting can take place. Every effort will be made to increase planting and tree canopy cover across the site, in appropriate places.
