Background information
The City of Kingston incorporates 13 km of coastline, residential suburbs, commercial areas and industrial zones.
There is a direct relationship between water use, urbanisation, a changing climate, and the impacts of pollution on our waterways and bay.
Kingston's Draft Integrated Water Strategy recognises the immense pressures that changes to our climate and increased urbanisation places on every part of the water cycle, including forecasts for an increase in hot days, less annual rainfall, and an increase in polluted stormwater runoff.
The strategic objectives, goals and targets, for both 2030 and 2050, are focused on:
using water wisely, including less drinking water (potable water) and more use of alternative water such as rainwater tanks, harvested stormwater and recycled water from Melbourne Water’s treatment plant
improving the quality of stormwater runoff from our local areas flowing into watercourses and into Port Phillip Bay
improving resilience to floods in the way we prevent, manage and respond to them
working with our community and regional partners to improve the way that our waterways and water resources are managed.
With a better understanding of how integrated water works and how water resources are managed, you can help protect our valuable natural assets to ensure their sustainability long into the future. Please download the documents on the right-hand side of this page to learn about our future challenges, our goals and how we can work together to make a difference:
