Project update: This consultation closed on Sunday 23 June 2024.
Update on the Judd Parade Reserve playground upgrade
In 2024, we consulted with the local community on our draft concept design for the playground upgrade at Judd Parade Reserve in Cheltenham. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback!
We have addressed your concerns and adjusted the design to meet your needs.
The final design includes:
- Tri-swing set with an inclusive nest swing, junior swing and sling swing on rubber soft fall
- Nature play area with timber log steppers and plantings
- Inclusive carousel
- Combination unit with a slide, shop front, monkey bars, climbing ropes and tunnel (for primary school-aged children)
- Bike spring rocker
- New seats and picnic table
- New trees and garden bed planting
- Upgraded footpath to concrete within the reserve and a new footpath to link to the playspace to the western side of the reserve
- Bike rack, bin and a drinking fountain with dog bowl
- Refurbished mesh fence to the reserve edge along Judd Parade Reserve and new pedestrian entry gates to be installed.
Construction
Works are expected to commence on site from mid-January 2026 and take approximately 12 weeks to complete (weather permitting).
When construction commences, temporary fencing will be installed for the safety of the community. We apologise for any inconvenience and will minimise disruption wherever possible while maintaining a safe work site.
We’re excited to be planning for the upgraded playground at Judd Parade Reserve in Cheltenham! A draft design has been developed, and we would like to know your thoughts.
The new playground area has been designed to offer an inclusive experience and play environment for all. Highlights of the design include:
- Combination unit with monkey bars
- Tri-swing set with nest swing and double swing
- Accessible spinner
- Bike springer
- Nature play and timber steppers
- New park furniture and footpath
- Additional trees for natural shade
- New fencing*
*As part of the upgrade, we're proposing to replace the existing mesh fence with a post and rail fence (see below) following ongoing community concern around the space being incorrectly used as an off-leash dog park.

Designing your playground
In 2023, over 2,500 of our residents had their say about the future of play in Kingston - and it's clear: you love our playgrounds just as much as we do! Through a series of events and workshops, complemented by an interactive online survey and a playground design tool, we connected with a diverse range of our residents - from toddlers to seniors. Community feedback helped shape the Play Your Way Strategy - and our draft design for the upgraded playground at Judd Parade Reserve in Cheltenham!
Judd Parade Reserve is classified as a 'Small Local' play space in Council's endorsed Play Your Way Strategy. 'Small Local' play spaces are our smallest, most commonly provided play spaces in residential areas. They generally have play options for smaller children (0–8 years), located within a 10-minute walk of a residential catchment, and include three to five pieces of play equipment and minimal support amenities. They are intended for short stays and can serve as 'respite' from home. They are often sited on a single or double-house block-sized allotment. As such, the playground design has been developed in response to the 'Small Local' play space classification.
