Why have the existing tennis courts been closed?

    Following recent court condition audits assessing the condition and safety of the six courts, three courts were deemed unsafe for play and since closed.

    Upgrades are required to all courts to ensure they are fit for future use. In the meantime, the remaining three courts can be used until further decisions regarding the future of the courts are made.

    Will Council re-build the tennis courts at this site?

    Council is assessing the future need for tennis facilities at this site as part of a broader tennis provision plan. The re-construction of tennis facilities will be determined via community engagement and overall tennis provision needs.  

    What are the plans for the existing tennis pavilion?

    The existing tennis pavilion is in a sound condition and will remain in its current location until further decisions associated with the future us of the site is determined.  

    What else is Council considering for this site?

    Council is seeking input from the community to help shape the future use of this site. Investigation into sporting facility needs for this area are being considered, as well as exploration of alternative use options for this site.  

    Is the site suitable for sporting infrastructure?

    The site is within a significant flood overlay area. Any future sporting infrastructure will need to consider this in its construction.

    Will the pony club remain at this site?

    Yes, the use of the site by the tenant pony clubs will not change.

    Will the nursery remain at this site?

    Yes, the nursery will remain. Council is currently undertaking planning for the upgrade of the nursery site, which will be designed to incorporate the operations of the nursery site at Bonbeach sports grounds, as well as the existing indigenous nursery.  

    Has Council engaged with existing users of the site?

    Yes, Council have met with the existing tenants of the site to understand their current use and strategic plans, as well as provide them with an overview of what is being considered for the site.

    What else could be considered at this site?

    Ultimately community engagement and assessment of community needs will shape the future provision at this site. Council is exploring options for use beyond sporting facilities such as, urban forest, solarfarm site, expansion of existing facilities at the site (nursery and pony club), public sports multi courts eg. pickleball, basketball, tennis, futsal.  

    Are any other investigations being undertaken at the site to better understand site conditions?

    Yes, Council will be engaging with Melbourne Water to further understand flood conditions of the site. Other preliminary site investigations will also take place. Council will also engage a sports consultant to consider potential design options and cost estimates, following community feedback.
