What is a Local Law?

Local laws help Councils support public safety, health and amenity in their community on issues that are not already governed by State or Federal Laws.

Why is Kingston updated its Community Local Law

Local laws should be updated every 10 years.
Our current Community Local Law was originally introduced in 2015 and has been amended several times.
The new Draft Local Law reflects changes made by new legislation, changes to the municipality and policies and strategies of Council. It has been updated to remove references to old laws, and to ensure consistency with current laws and the Kingston Planning Scheme.

What are some of the main changes proposed?

The Documents section of this page contains a summary of changes in the Community Impact Statement plus a full copy of the Draft Local Law.

    Will Kingston consider all feedback?

Yes, we are committed to considering all feedback. However, not all suggestions may be incorporated if they conflict with legal requirements, existing policies or the overall objectives of the Draft Local Law.

How long will a new Community Local Law be in place?

10 years from the date it is adopted, unless updated or revoked earlier.
