Consultation has concluded.
In partnership with the Victorian Government, we're transforming the Mentone Life Saving Club and precinct into a state-of-the-art facility with a new roof top viewing deck, a registered 'Changing Places' facility, modernised toilet and change facilities and the redevelopment of the surrounding foreshore precinct.
With construction of the new Mentone Lifesaving Club underway, we're ready to move forward with Stage 2 of the project, which includes a new children's playground, further landscaping works and a BBQ area.
Project background
The Bay Trail and surrounding Mentone Life Saving Club works (including DDA accessible ramp and stair access points to the beach) will increase accessibility and visitation to the area. Therefore, it was decided that the playground should be replaced, and the picnic area upgraded.
The original playground was removed in 2021, and the site has been stripped and used to house containers and toilets for Mentone Life Saving Club redevelopment operations and storage. The existing BBQ and several picnic tables have been retained.
Playground concept plan
The new playground area has been designed to offer an inclusive experience and play environment for all. Among the key elements included are:
An accessible basket swing, spinner and junior and toddler swing
A custom junior and senior ‘driftwood shack’ combination unit
An accessible path network connecting to the Bay trail and picnic area
A social gathering space with picnic tables, BBQ, open lawn area
A fence around the site with pedestrian safety and maintenance gates
Raised garden beds with indigenous shrubs and ground covers
Indigenous trees for shade, biodiversity and amenity
A drinking fountain with dog bowl
Bins and bicycle hoops
Construction on the new playspace will commence in mid-2023.
