Consultation has concluded
PROJECT UPDATE: At the November Council Meeting, Council approved the recommendation to apply to the Office of Geographic Names to name the pavilion the Carrum Sports Complex. You can read the report from the Council agenda here and view the meeting minutes here.
Council is seeking community input to help name the new pavilion at Carrum’s Roy Dore Reserve.
Earlier this year Council wrote to residents seeking your views on naming the pavilion after the Guy Family, following a suggestion from a community member.
Results from this community consultation were mixed, with some supporting the idea and others suggesting alternatives. You can find out more about the first stage of consultation by scrolling to the bottom of the page or clicking here.
As a result of the feedback, Council is now proposing a more general name for the pavilion and is seeking views on the name ‘Carrum Sports Complex’*.
Discussion would then be held separately with clubs at the site regarding the potential to name rooms within the pavilion to honour individuals.
Naming the new pavilion:
Naming of public buildings follows an official process set by the Victorian Government’s Office of Geographic Names. Under the Rules for Naming Places Victoria, Council must complete a 30-day community consultation period. The rules can be viewed at propertyandlandtitles.vic.gov.au under the section on Place Naming
Council is keen for the community to have its say on the pavilion’s proposed new name the 'Carrum Sports Complex' or provide other suggestions for consideration that meet the following criteria:
Ensuring public safety - must not risk public safety for emergency response, or cause confusion for transport, communication and mail services. Duplicate names within 5kms not permitted and directional names are to be avoided.
Recognising the public interest - regard given to long-term consequences and short-term effects on the wider community of naming
Linking the name to place - names that link the name to the place could relate to commemoration of a person, to Aboriginal culture and occupation of the land, local flora and fauna, Australian war contributions
Names must not be discriminatory.
Have your say:
Council is keen to seek a broad range of feedback from the community to help inform the naming of the pavilion at Roy Dore Reserve. You can share your views by:
• Completing the short online survey below
• Make a further submission by emailing info@kingston.vic.gov.au, mailing PO Box 1000, Mentone 3194 or phoning 1300 653 356.
* Please note: an information bulletin sent to local residents promoting the opportunity to have your say on naming the new pavilion inadvertently included the ‘Carrum Patterson Lakes Sports Pavilion’ in one mention. This was an error. We are consulting on 'Carrum Sports Complex’ or other suggestions that meet the criteria. We apologise for any confusion.
