State Government's Train & Tram Zone Activity Centres Program - Mentone Stage 2
Update: Mentone Train and Tram Zone Activity Centre
The Victorian Government has finalised the Mentone Train and Tram Zone Activity Centre Plan following consultation.
The plan aims to support:
additional housing close to public transport
shops, services and jobs
maintaining the character and liveability that residents value.
During the consultation, residents and the community highlighted the importance of protecting Mentone’s village feel, heritage buildings, open spaces, and walkable town centre. Along with valuing places such as Mentone Railway Station and Gardens, key pedestrian streets such as Mentone Parade, and Kilbreda College.
Key concerns included building heights, traffic and parking pressures, the protection of neighbourhood character, and the need for improved walking and cycling connections.
Outcomes
In response to feedback, building heights on Como Parade West have been adjusted to protect important views towards the Kilbreda College tower.
Existing heritage protections will remain, along with additional controls to help respond to the area's heritage character.
Planning measures have also been introduced to manage sunlight access to key public spaces, including the Mentone Station heritage gardens and nearby public gathering areas.
An Infrastructure Contributions Plan is being developed to help fund essential community infrastructure.
Potential improvements include:
safer walking and cycling connections
streetscape upgrades, and enhancements to public open space.
Key opportunities have been identified along local streets including:
Flinders Street
Rimmer Street
Como Parade
Kelso Street
Latrobe Street.
This is not a Council-led project, but we will continue to advocate for our community for the best outcomes.
The state government is inviting the community to provide feedback to shape the Mentone Activity Centre.
The Victorian Government is consulting with the community on the future of the Mentone Activity Centre as part of its Train and Tram Zone Activity Centres Program.
This stage of consultation will invite feedback on their draft plans, including proposed building heights and boundaries.
While this is not a Council-led project, we encourage residents, businesses and visitors to share their views directly with the Victorian Government to help shape the future of Mentone. Council will also make a submission.
