Consultation has concluded

In 2020 Council consulted with the community regarding safety improvements at Victory Park in Chelsea, in response to concerns regarding lack of shade and adequate fencing. Thank you to all who provided feedback. This consultation is now closed.

Council is now proceeding with the installation of shade sails and additional fencing.

Shade sails
Victory Park currently has very little shade. The existing trees don’t provide shade to the main playground and the toddlers’ sand area.

In response to community feedback regarding the lack of shade at this popular park, Council is installing two shade sails over the main playground and two umbrellas over the toddlers’ sand area, to help improve sun safety and make the park more enjoyable for the community. Please see images below for proposed shade sail/umbrella positioning. More information can be found in the document library.

Fencing improvements
The existing low mesh fence separating the road, car park and playground has a number of openings directly onto the road and car park. To improve safety, Council is installing gates and removing two openings. Please see diagram below for more information.

Construction timeframes and impacts

It is anticipated installation works for the shade sails and umbrellas will be carried out between 4 - 22 October, subject to weather conditions and COVID restrictions. The playground will be closed for the majority of this time.

Temporary fencing will be installed for the safety of the community during works, and this will be removed in stages as installation nears completion.

We apologise for any inconvenience during the works and will minimise disruption wherever possible, while maintaining a safe work site.

Playground fencing works will commence soon after the shade sail installation, with no interruption to the playground anticipated during this time.

The closest alternative playground is Bicentennial Park on Scotch Parade in Chelsea, which is 5 minutes away by car, or a 15-minute walk.
