We're seeking your feedback on the unnamed bushland reserve located at 19 Tarella Road in Chelsea.

We're proposing to name this open space 'Woolepe Bushland Reserve' - pronounced WOOL-EE-P - provided by the Bunurong Land Council, meaning 'Tea-tree'.

The use of traditional Aboriginal names is consistent with Kingston’s Reconciliation Action Plan and encouraged in Council’s Naming of Places Policy.

Background

In July 2021, 19 Tarella Road, Chelsea, was officially rezoned from residential land to a public park and recreation zone. The following year, acknowledging its important conservation values, Council declared the Reserve a 'no dog zone' after consulting the local community.

In August 2022, the Reserve opened to the public, and Council contacted the Bunurong Land Council requesting a name.

Naming the bushland reserve

The naming of public places follows an official process set by the Victorian Government’s Office of Geographic Names. Under the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria, Council must complete a 30-day community consultation period.

Consistent with Council's Naming of Places Policy and Reconciliation Action Plan, the Bunurong Land Council has provided the name Woolepe, meaning 'Tea-tree'. The Office of Geographic Names Victoria has been consulted and has not identified any concerns with the use of the name 'Woolepe'.
