Proposed cycling facilities and traffic calming measures in Bernard Street, Cheltenham
Proposed cycling facilities and traffic calming measures in Bernard Street, Cheltenham
In response to safety concerns raised by pedestrians and cyclists we are seeking your feedback on the following proposed options for changes to Bernard Street in Cheltenham.
Cyclist safety
To address issues raised by cyclists, Council is looking at the viability of introducing one of the following options:
Option1 - line-marked cycle lanes (see example in other site, in picture, below):
Converting existing on-street parking to a shared bicycle/parking lane of 3.2m wide, including removing the existing line marking and implementing bicycle symbols and bicycle lane. This does not have any impact to the amount of on-street parking.
Option 2 - 1.5m wide bike lanes in each direction:
Implement car (only) parking on one side of the road, mark out two bicycle lanes of 1.5m wide in each travelling direction and remove on-street parking on the other side of the road.
Option 3 - create a 2.5 metre wide, two-way bike path:
Implement a 2.5m wide two-way bike path on the south side of Bernard Street and remove all on-street parking on the south side. On-street parking on the north side will be retained.
Alternatively, we'd like to hear if you would prefer to opt for 'Option 4: no changes to Bernard Street'.
Traffic Calming measure
In order to address pedsetrian safety concerns, Council is also proposing to install a flat-top speed hump at the pedestrian-operated signal outside Cheltenham Secondary College.
