We are designing accessibility and safety improvements to Carrum Boardwalk

Carrum is a unique destination which we plan to make more accessible, by extending the boardwalk further north to improve the connection to the pedestrian path on Patterson River, Beauty Spot Reserve and improve accessibility to and from Stephens Street Car Park.

At the moment the boardwalk ends at Stephen Street. We plan to extend it further north to improve the connection to the pedestrian path on Patterson River. Our works will allow users of all abilities to access the boardwalk and the beach.

We are also planning some precinct-wide improvements to make the entire area safer and easier to navigate, and aim to complement the works planned for the adjoining Beauty Spot Park, and its War Memorial.

Our work will make it easier to travel between the river, Beauty Spot and foreshore, which will have flow on effects, improving access to and from the local retail precinct and transport - creating an easy-to-navigate destination for visitors and locals alike.

The project will include:

  • two new accessible parking bays
  • car park resurfacing
  • light realignment of parking bays
  • solar lighting for safer boardwalk and car park access at night
  • a viewing platform with seating and interpretive signage.

Background

The existing section of boardwalk was constructed in 2012. It was originally intended to be extended to meet up with the Patterson River walking tracks however was delayed due to the demolition of the Patterson River Motor Boat Club.

The club building has now been demolished and the rock sea wall has been installed in the gap so the boardwalk can now be extended through to the Patterson River to improve connectivity with the adjacent Stephens Street carpark and the Beauty Spot Reserve.
