In an exciting new initiative, Council is planning permanent outdoor activation improvements to help create welcoming spaces where neighbourhood businesses can thrive and people can enjoy time with family and friends, while shopping locally. The initiative is part of the City of Kingston’s Outdoor Activation Program and is made possible under the State Government’s COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund (Part B).
Council recognises that local shopping strips are where people like to engage with others and come together. We also know our Parkdale traders have done it tough in recent years and the development of these vibrant outdoor spaces may help attract more customers, while supporting them to operate in a COVIDSafe way.
Following an initial consultation with local traders, Council has developed a concept plan and would now like your feedback on the design. Proposed outdoor activation improvements in front of the shops between 1-17 Chandler Street, Parkdale include:
New permanent outdoor seating and tables
New trees and garden beds to improve streetscape appearance
Potential footpath and road artwork combined with a structure for children's games (see example in draft concept plan)
New 30 degree angled parking and one-way road to improve safety
Draft concept plan
You download the draft concept plan from the 'Document Library' on the right-hand side of this page.
Final concept plan
You can download the plan from the 'Document Library' on the right-hand side of this page.
Construction timeline
The concept plans were finalised in July, with works to commence in August, and the new outdoor activation improvements to be complete by mid-December, COVID-19 restrictions and weather permitting.
