Consultation has concluded.
Since December 2020, Kingston’s streetscapes have come alive with numerous outdoor dining options, including parklets. A parklet allows hospitality businesses to extend their outdoor dining to car parking spaces. If you’ve been out and about in Mordialloc, Moorabbin, Highett, Mentone, Aspendale or Parkdale over the past year, it’s likely that you’ve seen one of our parklets – you may have even visited one.
Temporary parklets and other outdoor activations have been a critical part of Council’s response to supporting local businesses through COVID-19 while indoor dining was heavily restricted.
Background information
In May 2021 we asked our community for their thoughts on outdoor dining and parklets to help inform a long-term policy for managing these spaces in Kingston. The majority of our community were supportive overall of parklets, with feedback indicating that more outdoor seating, better atmosphere and support for local businesses were the main community benefits.
Following consultation, we used your feedback to develop a draft parklet policy which will provide a framework to help guide how we manage parklets in future - through COVID-19 recovery and beyond. We understand that we need to get the balance right, by listening to our community, whilst doing whatever we can to support local businesses.
The policy aims to ensure that parklets add vibrancy to our streets and contribute to the overall wellbeing of our community, while also balancing the amenity needs of surrounding businesses and residents.
