Kingston Council is seeking community input to help plan for future road safety measures across the municipality.

Every year, on average, about 450 people in the City of Kingston are killed or require medical treatment because of a road casualty crash. These fatalities and injuries have long term social, psychological, financial and environmental effects on the people involved and the wider community.

We would like community feedback on the Draft Road Safety Strategy 2021-2026, to make sure that we are taking this important document in the right direction.

What are we trying to achieve?

While we are not likely to see the elimination of death and serious injury on Kingston's roads by 2026, we would like to ensure we work towards this goal, by implementating tasks and actions that lay the foundations for a safe system of road travel.

Background and context:

The City of Kingston has a strong strategic approach to providing services to our community. Therefore, Kingston's Road Safety Strategy document must consider existing policies to ensure a cohesive and coordinated process to implementing the tasks and actions set out in this report.

Our Roadmap Council Plan 2017-2021 sets out the Council's vision statement. It includes the Council's vision of a diverse, dynamic community where we all share a sustainable, safe, attractive environment and a thriving economy. The purpose is 'to work with the community to protect and enhance the quality of life for current and future generations'.

The City of Kingston has developed a draft strategy, which is consistent with the National Road Safety Strategy (2011-2020) and Victoria's Towards Zero plan, which aims to ensure no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Our Vision:

Kingston has created a Draft Road Safety Strategy 2021-26 which seeks to reduce the number of people killed or injured in road crashes and reduce the severity of injuries by:

  • Providing STRONG LEADERSHIP in coordination, communication, evaluation and funding of road safety.
  • Encouraging safe, consistent and compliant BEHAVIOUR through well-informed and educated road users.
  • Improving the SAFETY OF OUR ROADS and neighbourhoods for all road users.
  • REDUCING SPEEDS in key streets and advocating for better enforcement of poor speeding behaviour.
  • Promoting the importance of selecting SAFE VEHICLES.

Our key objectives:

To seek feedback on the draft of the city's next Road Safety Strategy 2021-26 to ensure we have considered all of the local strategies and opportunities available to reduce the risk of accidents on our roads.

Please note: this draft strategy is a high level document which does not detail any upcoming schedule of works/financial commitments for future construction projects. It focuses on opportunities for change at the planning and educational level, which can help to direct Council in its strategic commitments.

The Draft Road Safety Strategy can be viewed in the document library on this page. (Scroll below for smart phones or look at the top right for desktop computers/laptops).

We will be seeking community feedback on this consultation until 22 August 2021. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this draft strategy, please contact Michelle Galileos on 1300 653 356.
