Project Update: March 2023

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the concept designs for the upgrade.

Works are set to commence mid-March and run until the end of June 2023.

Exciting new upgrades to the reserve will include:

• Play equipment for all ages and abilities

• New plantings to enhance the current ‘natural’ and ‘greenery’ feeling of the reserve

• Art murals to develop a sense of place and community

• Break-out social seating options

• Inclusion of two new bins for litter and recycling.

In 2021 Council sought feedback from the community regarding safety and amenity improvements for Jean Street Reserve and Garfield Lane.

Thank you to those who provided input.

A concept design has now been created and can be viewed in the Document Library on the right-hand side of this page, or by clicking the thumbnail below.

The design was informed by the input from local residents and the broader community, as well as Victoria Police (Crime Prevention Unit) and Westfield Southland.

Key issues that are addressed in the design include poor lighting and visibility, anti-social behaviour, feelings of danger and isolation – in particular by women and gender-diverse people.

The design addresses these concerns by:

  • relocating the main play space to be more visible to the station, shopping centre and carpark. This also provides easier access for those who wish to use the playspace before and/or after visiting Southland
  • increasing the number of lights within the reserve/lane and strategically locating them to improve feelings of safety at night
  • creating a 2.5m wide main concrete footpath through the site, helping to create clear sightlines and removing any potential hiding spaces
  • including play equipment for all ages and abilities
  • enhancing wayfinding and navigation to ensure a more active space with greater passive surveillance and visibility of exit points
  • enhancing the current ‘natural’ and ‘greenery’ feeling of the reserve with new plantings
  • inclusion of two new bins (litter and recycling)
  • addressing drainage concerns.
  • incorporating art murals to develop a sense of place and community
  • creating break-out social seating options
  • including playground fencing.
