Thank you to everyone who participated in our community consultation on Kingston's draft Play Your Way Strategy.

There was overall support for the draft, and a summary of your feedback can be found in the document menu.

We're pleased to advise that the Play Your Way Strategy was adopted by Council at the December Council Meeting in 2023. You can read the meeting minutes and view the final Play Your Way Strategy document and accompanying final suburb profiles in the document menu.

Earlier this year, over 2,300 of our residents had their say about the future of play in Kingston—and it's clear: you love our playgrounds just as much as we do! Through 28 events and workshops, complemented by an interactive online survey and a playground design tool, we connected with a diverse range of our residents—from toddlers to seniors.

Draft Play Your Way Strategy

Your invaluable feedback has been instrumental in shaping the guiding principles of our draft Play Your Way strategy:

  • Equity: Ensure equal access to playgrounds for every community member, especially our youngest ones.
  • Diversity: Offer varied, fun, and stimulating play spaces throughout Kingston.
  • Quality: Deliver play spaces that truly serve their purpose.
  • Quantity: Aim for a Kingston where playgrounds are within everyone's easy reach, mirroring our city's population spread.
  • Safety: Implement cost-effective maintenance to ensure long-lasting and safe playgrounds.
  • Connection: Create opportunities for young people, their families, and friends to enjoy the outdoors while connecting with and learning about nature.
  • Sustainability: Prioritise sustainable designs and materials in play spaces.

In addition to broader community consultation, we engaged a Collaborative Engagement Group (CEG) of community members to help steer the development of this draft strategy.

A thorough assessment of all 116 playgrounds in Kingston, combined with industry research, has also brought the draft Play Your Way strategy to its current form. Now, we're eager to hear your thoughts on it. Have we got it right?

Additionally, we’ve provided an analysis of each suburb within Kingston, including demographics, current play and active recreation facilities, walkable catchments, issues, opportunities and strategic intentions based on the draft Play Your Way Strategy.

Next steps

The draft strategy highlights an asset renewal gap (playgrounds well past their prime!) in Kingston. We're currently developing an asset management system which - in addition to the strategy - will allow us to provide and maintain fun, fresh and safe play and active recreation spaces for our community to enjoy. Following Council's adoption of the Play Your Way Strategy, we look forward to delivering the future of play in Kingston – so keep an eye on yourkingstonyoursay.com.au for all upcoming 'Play Your Way' projects!
