Proposed speed limit change - Station Street, between Carrum and Aspendale

In response to residents advising us that they want to see less ‘through traffic’ on Station Street and would prefer it to be used more as a ‘local’ street, (with improved road safety at pedestrian crossings and side roads), we are proposing to change the speed limit from 60 km/h to 50 km/h.

All speed limits in Victoria are governed by VicRoads and an important consideration in any speed limit change is the community’s feedback on the proposal.

Work we've done so far

The removal of the level crossings at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach provided an ideal opportunity for the Level Crossing Removal Project (working with Council) to deliver changes to Station Street that supported community sentiment and better reflect the use of Station Street as a local street.

These works have included the installation of several pedestrian signals and zebra crossings (in combination with flat-top speed humps and flashing lights) on Station Street. A shared use path has also been provided for pedestrians and cyclists on the railway side of Station Street which has narrowed the previously wide carriageway.

As these level crossing removal works have now been completed (with further works proposed at Aspendale Station) Council would like to know your thoughts on lowering the speed limit on Station Road from 60 km/h to 50km/h along the full length of Station Street between Nepean Highway in Aspendale and Eel Race Road in Carrum (except where 40km/hr limits already exist such as outside schools).

Safety improvements

The combination of traffic measures (already installed) and lower speed along Station Street will encourage more ‘through traffic’ to use Nepean Highway and leave Station Street freer for residential traffic. Reducing speeds will also significantly improve road safety along Station Street.

The lower speed limit will also improve vehicle safety and reduce severity, in the event of an accident.

In summary, if approved - the proposed changes would see:

  • Speed limits reduced to 50 km/h along Station Street, between Eel Race Road (Carrum) and Nepean Highway (Aspendale).

If the speed limit reduction goes ahead, signage displaying the new speed limit will be installed.
