Improving Kingston's Small Shopping Centres

The City of Kingston is home to many small shopping centres that contribute to the local economy and vibrant atmosphere of our City. Small shopping centres refer to strip shopping areas that have a mix of convenience retail, services and offices. They play an important social and economic role for communities in local areas, providing meeting places for nearby residents and encouraging community loyalty and support for local businesses.

Background information

The impact of COVID-19 has seen many Kingston residents rediscover their local small shopping centres and nearby traders. This in turn has led to a significant increase in the number of enquiries for streetscape and amenity improvements from both residents and business owners.

In order to respond to future requests, Council is developing the Small Shopping Centres Improvement Plan to provide a framework that will help prioritise investment proposals in small shopping centres.

Council is seeking community input and gathering information on 38 small shopping centres in Kingston (see list below). The feedback will assist with Council's audit assessment of existing conditions within each small shopping centre and help identify and prioritise potential improvements that will inform the Plan.

An update on improving Kingston's small shopping centres

Thank you to everyone who let us know how you use your local small shopping centre and shared your thoughts on its appearance and function. Your input, along with an assessment of each centre's condition, has helped develop a priority list for future improvements.

Fourteen small shopping centres have been identified for maintenance improvements starting this month, with further upgrades (which could include improvements to street furniture) to commence in these centres later this year.

A further six centres have been identified for major upgrades in future years, with the first project (Charman Road, Mentone) to commence the design phase shortly.
