**This consultation is now closed. A Draft Masterplan will be released shortly for feedback**

Council is producing a masterplan for Spring Road Reserve, a rehabilitated landfill site, shown below, which is set to become a beautiful new open space for the community to enjoy. The plan will consider an overall vision for the reserve, the development of which will be staged over the next few years.

Site history

Former landfill site. Originally used for horticulture. Between 1950 and 1980, the site was a sand quarry. Following this, the large quarry became a landfill until it was full in mid-1990's. City of Kingston took ownership of the site soon after and carried on environment management, with the long term goal to rehabilitate the site to enable it to be returned to the community.

Site limitations

As part of the environmental management, the old landfill site was capped. This cap varies in depth throughout the site. Because of this, there are limitations on what can be installed on site and where facilities can be located. There are also restrictions on where tree planting can take place as additional soil will be required to mound areas for new trees. Council is, however, keen to increase tree planting and biodiversity values within the site, so every effort will be made to increase planting and tree canopy cover across the site, in appropriate places.
