Summer Pop-Up Plaza at The Strand, Chelsea
Consultation has concluded.
We're excited to be planning for a summer pop-up plaza at The Strand in Chelsea! Our aim is to enhance outdoor dining and activation opportunities and support the local community over the 2023/24 summer period.
Project background
The Strand in Chelsea benefits from existing street fixtures, including multiple bench and platform seating options and power. To complement this permanent infrastructure, we're planning a pop-up plaza to increase the vibrancy of this space as we begin to move into the warmer months, increasing outdoor dining and activation opportunities to support the local community and traders.
What's in the pop-up plaza?
We've put together a list of possible options intended to re-energise and activate The Strand in Chelsea over summer. These exciting outdoor activations and programs are designed to encourage community members to visit the site as a destination, fostering a sense of connection to 'place' and each other through creating fun and shared experiences in this space.
Proposed longer-term activation options include:
- Picnic tables
- Window decals
Proposed short-term programs include:
- Neon lighting activations
- Face painting
- Bean bag chairs
- Large scale outdoor Jenga
- Live music
- Interactive installations
- Workshops and creative programming

Parking for locals is enough of a challenge in summer. Would be good if we had access to dedicated parking to access the shopping and beach area

Pop-up outdoor cinema, with deck chairs and beanbags. Palace cinema runs something like that at the Westgarth cinema

I'd like to understand how occupation levels and security in this space would be managed, especially with increasing summer visitors.
The Strand is long overdue for a facelift and redefined purpose. I love the idea of introducing safe outdoor dining here, as well as music and light. Last summer though, the level of foot traffic on the strip, was beyond anything I'd seen before. I was having to step over and around kids sitting outside the takeaway shops particularly. How will numbers be controlled? I'm not a fan of the pop up carnival theme in general because of this issue.

Performers & activations, spaces to sit and enjoy from local traders. Would be great to see some dedicated cleaning of the strip, too.
