We’re working to make it easier for everyone to enjoy Kingston’s beaches.

We are committed to investing in accessible improvements, such as ramps and improved entry points, to make sure everyone can enjoy a trip to the beach. Council is developing a framework to guide future foreshore access infrastructure improvements that will help us roll-out a long-term plan for improvements along Kingston’s 13km of beaches.

Background

  • In 2021, audits of six sites north of Mordialloc Creek were completed to assess compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA 1992). Council approved these sites for inclusion in the capital works forward plan.
  • In 2023, Council adopted the All Abilities Action Plan (2024–2029), co-designed with a dedicated Co-design Team comprising community members with disability and carers worked with Council to create an inclusive plan for all.
  • A significant 2024 storm event damaged several foreshore access points and highlighted further infrastructure needs. An insurance claim for storm damage was rejected, requiring Council to fund repairs.
  • Additional audits of access points south of Mordialloc Creek were conducted to support a comprehensive framework for prioritising future works.
  • Key drivers include DDA audit results, storm impacts, coastal hazard risk, community requests, Councillor input, and budget constraints.
