The Chelsea Yacht Club building has been identified as a priority for disability compliance upgrade works. Set over three levels, the existing internal access ramp is unreasonably steep, access to the first and second floors is via internal stairs and the toilets do not meet current accessibility standards.
Council has been working closely with the Chelsea Yacht Club on plans to renew and upgrade the building to address the broad range of Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) non-compliance issues. The proposed works include:
Improvement of entry paving and the internal entry ramp
Installation of a passenger lift from ground to first/second floors
Improvement of first floor accessible toilet facilities
General refurbishment of first floor male/female amenities to support accessible toilets
Reconfiguration of first floor, kitchen and bar area, to accommodate passenger lift access and accessible amenities
Relocation of office and storage space to support addition of accessible amenities.
There will be no alteration to the exterior of the building aside from a correction to the entry paving. The passenger lift has been designed to be fully contained within the existing building, with no alteration to the roof height. Works are proposed to be completed during Autumn/Winter 2021.
Council is currently seeking community feedback on the proposed works. You can access the Council endorsed plans here, and in the document library to the right. Design is subject to change. You can review the July meeting minutes where Council endorsed the improvements here.
These refurbishments are part of Council's commitment to ensure our buildings are accessible to all members of our community. Council's goal is that each facility meets contemporary access compliance requirements by 2035 to help encourage inclusive participation in a range of social, recreational and educational activities for all members of our community.
