Consultation has concluded

Project Update

Based on the feedback received during the consultation period and analysis of the 2023 traffic survey data, Council will not be proceeding with the proposed trial closure.

The feedback provided by both the local and wider community have indicated that the majority of the community is not in favour of the proposed closure of Cox Street.

It is important to note that this was found to be the predominant sentiment across both groups.

See the bulletin in the Documents section for more information.

Background

We have received community feedback about the volume of vehicles flowing through Cox Street, Cheltenham. To better understand these concerns, Council conducted a street investigation, including a speed and volume survey in May 2023.

Results of this survey showed an average of 791 vehicles per day with most (85%) travelling under 43km/h which is within the expected range for a local street such as Cox Street.

While the data suggests current traffic levels are acceptable, we know many Cox Street residents are dedicated to improving safety and reducing negative driver behaviour.

To work towards this, we launched the Community Champions program. Late last year, three residents were nominated to work with Council to help shape the future vision of their street. They will play a key role in leading conversations with neighbours and helping Council design solutions that reflect the community’s vision.

Proposed changes

As part of this community-led approach process, we are proposing a 12-month trial closure of Cox Street at the Warrigal Road end to reduce traffic flow throughout the street.

The Community Champions have accepted and endorsed this idea, and they will help advocate to reach the best outcome for the community.

This trial aims to create a safer, lower-traffic environment and assess how the change could enhance local amenity for everyone, supporting the objectives of Kingston’s Walking and Cycling Plan.

You can view a map of the proposed changes on the right-hand side of this page.
