Consultation has concluded
The Victorian Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project is coming soon and Council wants to make sure Mentone's history is preserved while ensuring the success of the precinct for years to come.
In the coming years, Mentone will undergo significant changes with the Victorian Government’s project to remove the level crossing at Balcombe Road commencing at the end of 2018.
We’re currently working with the community and key stakeholders to prepare an Urban Design Framework for the area around Mentone Station.
The framework will provide a vision for new infrastructure, open spaces, land use, car parking and pedestrian connections associated with the level crossing removal project.
Community engagement
Council considered the community’s submissions and adopted the final UDF at a meeting on Monday 11 December 2017. Subject to Council adoption, the UDF will then be implemented into the Planning Scheme.
Throughout July and August 2017, Council asked the local community what should be improved and preserved in Cheltenham. We did this through:
a pop-up information sharing session
an online survey
face-to-face engagement with local traders.
What we heard
Mentone has a unique look and feel.
The Kilbreda tower is highly valued.
Mentone Station building and the heritage gardens are highly valued.
More public space is needed and the gardens should be extended with more greenery.
Most people travel to Mentone by car.
The plan
We’ve prepared a Precinct Concept Plan for Mentone that incorporates the community feedback received. The plan proposes:
retaining the State-significant heritage station buildings
expanding and enhancing the Mentone Station Gardens
improving pedestrian and cycling links
providing extra open space
maintaining important commuter parking
an improved transport interchange
maintaining views to Kilbreda Tower
enhancing Mentone’s historic feel.
Have your say
A pop-up information sharing session was held on Como Parade West opposite Mentone Station on Thursday 9 November from 2.30pm - 5.30pm.
Community members could also have their say on the plans bySunday 19 November 2017by completing the feedback form below or writing to Council.

The
removal of the level crossing at Balcombe Road by State Government will provide
a lowered rail line, new station building and a redesign of how commuter car
parking is provided.
This project will
have a big impact on the Mentone station precinct and surrounds and Council
would like to understand the community’s vision and opinions to advocate for a
station precinct that responds to the heritage and landscape character of
Mentone.
