Have your say on the Namatjira Park Master Plan - 2025
As part of Council’s continued commitment to improve open spaces, a Master Plan for improvements to Namatjira Park was prepared and endorsed in 2021.
Background
A community consultation process was undertaken the same year to gather feedback on how the park is currently used and how the community would like it to be used in the future. This feedback played a key role in shaping the Master Plan.
Following further site investigation works, the layout of the master plan has been refined, however the vision and scope remain the same. We have also further developed the concept designs for the Active Recreation and Skate Park proposed at Namatjira Reserve.
It is essential that the park continues to meet the needs of the community now and into the future, and Council’s successful advocacy has helped secure significant federal funding to assist in implementing the plan.
The key improvements identified in the Master Plan have been further tested for fit and integration against existing site features - including trees, underground assets, and changes in ground levels.
Key Upgrades
We’re now progressing a number of key upgrades at Namatjira Park, aligned with both the Master Plan and community feedback. Here’s an overview of what’s proposed - and what’s changed:
- Upgraded multi-sports fields with new sports lighting
- New alignment of sports fields including two soccer pitches and a synthetic cricket wicket to cater for multiple sports and future proofing.
- A turf wicket table and cricket practice nets were originally proposed but are no longer included due to site constraints.
- Traffic and parking improvements, includes expansion of car parking spots available. Note: Closure of the entrance and car park off Newport Road.
- Upgraded playground, including a new nature play area and outdoor table tennis.
- Outdoor gym upgrade
Following community consultation in early 2025, the outdoor gym will be upgraded in its current location based on community feedback. - Improved path and trail network with improved lighting to support safer, more accessible movement through the park, inclusive of wayfinding and distance markers.
- New sports pavilion proposed at the southern end of the sports field.
- Relocated to make better use of sports viewing and improved accessibility.
- New expanded skate/scooter/BMX facility for all skill levels.
Originally proposed near Spring Road, this facility will now be built at the site of the existing skate bowl. - Active play zone revised
Due to the presence of major underground infrastructure, the original plan for multiple active courts (tennis, basketball/netball, futsal, rebound wall, and skate facilities) has been revised. The new plan includes:- 1 x tennis court
- 1 x multi-use court (basketball/netball/futsal)
- Table tennis
- Covered bowling green
This work is being delivered by Bowls Club. These works are underway. - Landscaping works to increase canopy cover with minimal tree loss.
