Pedestrian Safety, Como Parade West and Como Parade East Mentone

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Background

Council is responding to community concerns about the lack of a suitable pedestrian crossing on Como Parade West (near Cremona Street) and Como Parade East (near Rogers Street), Mentone. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of children crossing the two roads during school drop-off and pick-up hours.

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has been conducting work at this location to improve pedestrian connectivity. As a result, the centre median island on Como Parade West has been extended to the south and a new pair of pram crossings will be installed on Como Parade West and Como Parade East.

Council Action

Council proposes to further improve safety at the site by:

  1. Adding two speed cushions on Como Parade West, near the extended centre median island, to slow traffic in the area. Council will also conduct traffic and pedestrian counts (post COVID-19 restrictions and once school returns) to determine if further measures such as a zebra crossing are warranted.
  2. Providing a supervised school crossing on Como Parade East near Rogers Street.
  3. Installing line marking on Rogers Street (at the Como Parade East intersection) to improve separation between vehicles exiting Rogers Street and the proposed school crossing.
