Consultation has concluded
As part of Council's commitment to improving open spaces, a draft concept plan has been prepared for picnic and minor playground upgrades at Peter Scullin Reserve in Mordialloc.
We've developed a draft concept plan that creates a new picnic, toddler and youth spaces for community use.
The draft concept plan incorporates the following elements:
social gathering space for the local community, including two new regional shelters, wheelchair accessible barbecues and picnic tables, relocated drinking fountain, repurposing the existing concrete plinths with bench seating and flexible lawn area
expanded playground space that features a new toddler play area with timber boardwalk, rubber beaching, mudstone terraced steps and potential sea creature sculpture (to be determined)
youth social gathering space with a new outdoor table tennis table and informal seating area
tree and garden bed planting to provide shade and improve the park appearance.
Construction
Following the public consultation process, the design will be modified to reflect the community’s feedback. It is anticipated that works will take place prior to summer 2017.

Thank you to all those who provided feedback on the draft plan to upgrade the picnic facilities and install a toddler sand play area at Peter Scullin Reserve playground. There were many fantastic suggestions to improve the playground. Due to the scope of the project not all suggestions can be accommodated at this time, however these suggestions will be considered as part of any future major playground upgrade.
As requested, Council will be installing bicycle parking facilities and is currently investigating additional shade sails across the playground.
Works will commence in late October 2017 and are anticipated to be completed by Christmas 2017 (weather permitting). The some areas of the playground and park will be closed to the public during construction.

The park needs safety fences to keep children from running on the drive way and highway. Water spouts and fountain in summer would be fun. More toddler swings. Adult seating near play area needed. Chealsea bi centennial park has some great play equipment and family friendly ideas.

Need adequate shade for toddler area/ sand play space (none shown on draft plan). Bicycle parking would be desirable. Need something to appeal to 8-14 age group (between toddler and youth) - perhaps a flying fox? Skate area and /or basketball hoop would be more appealing to youth than a table tennis facility with potential issues over provisions of bats and balls.

Bicycle parking access would be advantageous from the Bay Trail alignment. Bicycle access and parking would be great for visiting families.
Another suggestion - it isn't clear in the plan whether there's bike rail/hoops to secure a bike when visiting the park, and clear legal routes for adult riders into and out of the park. Great if you can provide rails for parking in a suitable, safe, location that can easily and legally be reached by riders.

Thanks for the opportunity. I don't think the table tennis area is appealing to youth. If the bats are attached on cables, where will the ball come from? And who plays table tennis these days? I think a half court basketball ring, and some rails etc for skateboarding, scooter riding will have much wider appeal, with bench seats overlooking it. And lighting and plenty of bins close by. I like the BBQ improvements, and support there being hard roofed shelters that provide sun and rain protection all year round. There's some good designs in other Kingston parks.

Sounds great. I take it users of the table tennis table bring their own bats and balls? Would you consider basketball court (or half court with ring) A hill with large enclosed slide would be great like at the pirate park in keysborough on somerfield drive N. Also enclosing the play area with fence would be great for safety as beach road is very busy. A water feature that shoots the water jets out of the ground would be cool too, even if it is just turned on in the summer months. And a second spinning swing thing like the yellow one that is there as it is so popular there is often a line on weekends. A ride on bycicle that is on tracks to go around the park would be fun too. A double swing where you put child in and parent sits opposite and the whole thing swings (they have one in nsw on the beach at snapper rocks/Coolangatta) And the workout style equipment for adults. Insufficient detail provided unfortunately. No detail on type of equipment to be installed for toddlers, no detail of plantings - please provide plenty of shade trees rather than hard roof shelters. Totally dislike the concrete bank seats - they are cold, hard, ugly - even with timber on the top. Please consider some other form of seating that is more attractive, beach styled. Please contact me for some ideas as I have taken photos of much more attractive seating seen on my travels.

Draft plan for Peter Scullin Reserve is poorly presented. It does not clearly show the orientation of the plan. Where is beach Road? Where is the entrance road to the carpark?
As this area is close to the beach, it would be good to have additional beach showers installed along the foreshore, and more rubbish bins.
