Council transparency builds trust, promotes the right to access of information, and ensures that Council is working within the public interest of the community.
The Local Government Act 2020 (the Act) requires Council to adopt and maintain a public transparency policy. Council decision making processes must be transparent except when the Council is dealing with information that is confidential by virtue of the Act or any other Act.
Council must adopt this policy on or before 1 September 2020.
The public transparency policy must:
give effect to the public transparency principles under section 58 of the Local Government Act 2020;
describe the ways in which Council information is to be made publicly available; and
specify which Council information must be publicly available, including all policies, plans and reports under the Act or any other Act.
In developing the Public Transparency Policy, Council must ensure that:
information must be understandable and accessible to members of the municipal community; and
public awareness of the availability of Council information must be facilitated.
Council welcomes submissions from the community to be taken into consideration in developing the Public Transparency Policy.

4.1 Public transparency principles. Point b. Publically available unless ( ii ) contrary to the public interest. Very vague. Who decides, based on what? d. Facilitated how? What does that mean exactly? How are individual councillors accountable for there actions, or lack of action. What mechanism is in place to ensure residents know where each councellor stands on a particular issue. What obligation do individual councillors have to respond to residents enquiries? Where is this published or available?
