As part of our commitment to improving our open spaces in Kingston, we have developed a draft masterplan for Bald Hill Park to guide the long-term planning for the site - and we want to hear from you! Did we get it right?

Project background

In 2024, we consulted with the community to understand how they currently use Bald Hill Park - and how they would like to use it in future. Detailed feedback revealed that the community desires:

  • Increased tree canopy
  • Upgraded footpaths
  • Increased picnic facilities
  • Increased garden bed planting
  • More shelters
  • Increased passive play areas

Project details

The draft masterplan has been developed to ensure that the input from the community and key stakeholders was incorporated so that the park meets the community's needs now and in the future. Key areas for improvement identified in the draft masterplan include:

  • Enhanced ecology (tree canopy coverage and biodiversity through planting)
  • Adjusting two, disc golf holes
  • Ensuring good options for events such as cross country
  • Improved connectivity within the site and pedestrian priority crossings over Bunney Road
  • Improved wayfinding and signage to clearly define entries
  • Picnic shelters, table tennis, seating and platform benches for family gatherings or for individuals to rest and enjoy
  • Nature immersive educational spaces

Site limitations

As part of environmental requirements, the old landfill site was capped. This cap varies in depth throughout the site. Because of this, there are limitations on what can be installed on site and where facilities can be located. There are also restrictions on where tree planting can take place, but it may be possible to mound soil for new trees. Council is, however, keen to increase tree planting and biodiversity values within the site, so every effort will be made to increase planting and tree canopy cover across the site, in appropriate places.
