Walter Galt Reserve Pavilion Upgrade
Update on the sports pavilion upgrade at Walter Galt Reserve
As part of our commitment to providing improved sporting facilities at Walter Galt Reserve in Parkdale, we consulted with the community in later-2024/early-2025 regarding the pavilion upgrades and improvements. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback!
The pavilion and sporting facilities at Walter Galt Reserve are being developed to better meet the needs of our current and future Parkdale community. This $3.45 million project is a collaboration between Council ($2.7M) and the Victorian State Government ($750,000).
Sporting facility upgrades, completed in 2025, included:
- Sports lighting globes on Oval 1
- AFL netting
Stage 1 pavilion works will include:
- Demolition of section of old pavilion
- Excavation works and site preparation.
Stage 2 pavilion construction works will include:
- Four new changerooms with female-friendly facilities (continuing our work to ensure women and girls have equal access to sports)
- New public toilets, umpire facilities and upgraded first aid facilities and storage areas
- Improved access to the sportsground and car park and new pathways surrounding the pavilion
- Landscaping around the pavilion with seating and garden beds.
Timing and impacts
Works for the upgraded pavilion will commence in early-2026, completion is expected in late-2026 (weather permitting).
While the new facility is under construction, existing sport activity and access to the sportsground will continue to be accessible, but some temporary facilities will be installed on site for use by the clubs. Temporary signage and fencing will be installed during construction for the safety of the community.
We apologise for any inconvenience and will minimise disruption wherever possible while maintaining a safe work site. We look forward to delivering this facility for the community.
As part of our commitment to providing improved sporting facilities at Walter Galt Reserve in Parkdale, we're upgrading the sports pavilion to meet the growing demand for cricket and AFL facilities and provide more sporting and community facilities for the Parkdale community.
Project highlights:
- Four new changerooms with female-friendly facilities (continuing our work to ensure women and girls have equal access to sports)
- New public toilets, umpire facilities and upgraded first aid facilities and storage areas
- Improved access to the sporting oval and car park and new pathways surrounding the pavilion
- Landscaping around the pavilion with seating and garden beds.
In addition to the pavilion works, we will be upgrading the sports light globes on Oval 1 at Walter Galt Reserve, as the existing light globes do not meet AFL minimum sports lighting requirements. We will replace the metal halide light globes with modern LED light globes, providing a better and more cost-effective lighting solution for the clubs.
