Background information

Council invites you to have your say on our design for Vanessa Court Reserve in Oakleigh South.

The reserve is currently underutilised and redevelopment will maximise the opportunities available for the large open space.

The Vanessa Court Reserve redevelopment concept plan can be viewed in the Document Library to the right and includes the following key features:

  • Picnic table setting and shelter structure
  • Concrete and granitic sand circuit path with bench seating
  • Large open grass space with grass play mound
  • Nature-based play space (examples in the Photos section to the right)
  • Entry arbour surrounded by native planting.

Construction impacts

Prior to the redevelopment, the eight existing cypress trees which are interfering with neighbouring properties on the south of the reserve will be removed (see attached plan). This will occur in May/June.

A total of 32 new trees will be planted, which exceeds the current Council direction to plant three trees for each one removed.

Construction timeframes

Council will remove the cypress trees in May/June.

The Reserve design will be revised based on your feedback with construction due to commence in September.

The reserve will be open for you to enjoy before the end of 2021.

Toilets would be good for families and older people

Looks great! Perhaps the dog bowl and drinking tap could be placed away from playground area - I am a dog owner and try to do the right thing and keep my dog away from children play areas. Also agree with other commenter concerns regarding picnic areas so close to houses - perhaps more to the open area, not abutting fences.

Hi,

My feedback on the concept plan are as follows:

1. Instead of planting native indigenous trees, we suggest planting fruit trees like lemon, cum quat, orange, olive , etc along the fences . Sort of like an orchard , view will give great aesthetic pleasure and at same time productive.
2. In order to give us a bit of privacy and also protection so that balls will not go over our fence , we suggest that all trees should be along the fences ( just like the fence facing the entry arbour).
3. For safety purposes , We suggest that all play areas should all be out in the open space. No small grass play areas near the fences , no hidden grass play areas ie covered by the trees.
4. We moved to this house in 1993. Our four children are now adults. Three have moved out. Our neighbors are mostly seniors, empty nesters . Nature play areas which include rocks, logs, balance beams are dangerous to both children and senior people like us and our neighbors . We suggest installing swings for both children and seniors where we can relax and enjoy looking at the colorful fruit trees. It would also be nice to install a slide on the grass play mound area.

As someone that lives only a stone throw away from the reserve, my concern is the intention to include a picnic area & table setting just a few metres away from residential housing. This will potentially encourage gatherings & therefore noise in what is currently a tranquil environment. Picnic areas positioned so close to residential housing are pretty rare as planners obviously try to ensure no disturbance to local residents. I am surprised to see this as part of the initial concept plan.

Is it possible to include a way to access the bike and walking path alongside the Dingley Bypass, which this park is near? This may require acquisition of private land or building a bridge or tunnel. There is a large patch of land alongside the Dingley Bypass that is unused and would be a nice addition to the Vanessa Court park if they were connected. The plans look great. It would be good to have an off-leash dog area included in the plans- we have noticed that quite a few dog owners from the local area use this space to exercise their dogs at the moment
