As part of Council's commitment to improving its open spaces, we have developed a draft Master Plan for Namatjira Park to help guide the long-term planning for the site.
Council is seeking community feedback on the Master Plan to ensure the park continues to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.
The master plan considers:
what sporting requirements the current users have
the needs/interests of future users
the local community's passive leisure and recreational needs
the issue of ageing infrastructure
the location and orientation of infrastructure
how Namatjira Park links to nearby open space and residential areas
pedestrian access
vehicle access
how a space can be created that balances environmental, financial, and infrastructure requirements.
The master plan is focused on maintaining and enhancing three areas:
Play
Sport / active recreation
Environmental
In January 2021 we undertook community consultation to get feedback on how Namatjira Park is used currently and how the community would like it to be used in the future. This feedback was used to help shape the master plan.
Key improvements identified in the draft master plan include:
upgraded multi-sports field with sports lighting and practice cricket nets
traffic improvements, including discontinuation of traffic to and from Newport Road and improved car parking at the park
upgraded playground
expanded path and trail network and improved lighting
new pavilion (relocated to the western side of the sports field)
new active play zone that accommodates tennis courts (x2), basketball/netball, futsal courts, tennis rebound wall and improved skate/scooter/BMX infrastructure facilities.
All-weather (synthetic) bowls green with membrane roof.
