Your new aquatic and leisure centre needs a name! What's your vote?
We’re excited to be building a new aquatic and leisure centre in Mordi, and it needs a name that is welcoming, easily recognisable and memorable. Something that creates a connection with the community through place and environment with an approachable and positive feel.
We've been working with our Community Reference Group and industry experts to shortlist five names for the new centre, and now it's your turn to help us decide. The names include:
Baam Aquatic Centre
(Pronounced barm)
A celebration of the heritage significance of the area, Baam is a local Indigenous word meaning ‘waterhole’. The one-syllable word is easy to recall and condensed enough for enduring impact. Drawing from the symbolism of the ‘waterhole’, it aptly supports the idea of the new centre as “a vibrant place for our community to gather, where people can develop social connections and a sense of belonging”.
Mordi Aquatics
Direct and descriptive, Mordi Aquatics highlights the key purpose and offerings available at the new centre.
Mordi Aquatic Centre
A name that says exactly what it is while referencing the most relatable location term, Mordi, used by locals.
Mordi Baam Aquatic Centre
(Pronounced barm)
Matching the most relatable locational term, Mordi, with the local Indigenous word, Baam, that means ‘waterhole’ emphasises the heritage significance of the area and “a vibrant place for our community to gather”.
Mordi Pools
Simple and straightforward, Mordi Pools, celebrates the iconic status of the local pool. It pre-empts the name that locals will assign it, whether it is official or not. The addition of the ‘s’ to ‘Pool’ suggests more than one pool and by doing so promotes the larger offering of the centre.

How did we come up with these names?
We developed the list of potential names during workshops with our Community Reference Group (CRG) and industry experts. It was suggested that 'Mordi', the abbreviation of Mordialloc, gives the locals a sense of connection, ownership, and pride and captures the suburb's easy-going, warm vibe.
The Indigenous name included in the list of names was provided by the Bunurong Land Council. Council acknowledges that the use of traditional Aboriginal names is encouraged, in line with our internal policies that seek greater use of Indigenous names through place naming. The widespread use of Indigenous names provides a strong connection to our Indigenous heritage and acknowledges Indigenous culture.
Additionally, the naming of public places follows an official process set by the Victorian Government's Office of Geographic Names. The Office of Geographic Names Victoria has been consulted on all five names and has not identified any concerns, however they will need to formally approve the final name.
What will we do with your vote?
The results from the community vote will help inform Council's final decision on a name for the new aquatic and leisure centre. The name endorsed by Council will then be submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for approval.
